Khal Mohammadi Hand Knotted Rug 4'2" x 6'5"

This is a Khal Mohammadi rug. Khal Mohammadi rugs are one of the few brands that are not named after a city or region. They are named after the legendary Afghani father of 25 children. The rugs are warm and inviting, made of deep reds with black or navy details.  The colours of the red are what give the rugs their name and were developed by Khal Mohammad himself. The patterns are almost always the same, usually a form of repeated columns of ‘Gul’ or ‘Fil Pai’ (Elephant foot prints). 

This is a hand-knotted rug. This rug was made on a handloom, with the fibers knotted by hand. The knots in this rug are inserted into the base and then tied, making it an extremely high quality rug. These knots make the rug pile. The hand-knotting for this rug required a lot of time and labour. As a hand-knotted rug, this rug is made from natural fibers. The most typical rug that is made by Afghans is that of the octagonal elephant's foot (Bukhara) print, often with a red background.
